When you are given free rein as designers to create and build whatever you want, it is easy to see how this Cape Town nightclub became a passion project for us. Playing with a range of architectural styles, we have created a quirky and eclectic space that seems to be more than the sum of its parts.
Our architectural plasterwork for Biblio spans floor to ceiling: cast cement tomette floor tiles laid throughout, bespoke decorative wall panelling, and a series of ornate plaster ceilings including groin vaults, barrel vaults, domes and coffered ceilings. Every element was designed, cast and installed by our Cape Town workshop, from the first mould to the final finish.

Nestled against the foot of the mountains just outside Franschhoek sits La Motte wine farm.
Spearheaded by Basalt, the redesign set out to bring the outside in. Floral relief runs through the interiors: cast into the joinery of the reception desks, pay points, wine bar and café bar, and imprinted into the floor tiling. The basins are ours too.
Each motif was modelled and cast by Plaster Art to Basalt’s design, then finished to sit as part of the object rather than an addition to it.

When a brewery needs a new bar counter, of course it has to be shaped like an oversized bottle cap.

Everywhere you go, a hotel room feels like a hotel room. Alphen decided to break the mould.
The walls are worked in layered panel mouldings, set at heights chosen for the proportions of each room. Simple profiles, stacked. The result is depth and shadow rather than decoration, and a guest room that reads as a room in a house.

Designed by Etienne Hanekom, this witty intervention keeps the farm building and changes everything about it.
Cream appears to have been poured down the walls, caught mid-run and set hard. The original chicken coop is still legible underneath. The plasterwork does the whole job of turning it into an ice cream parlour.

Bloom began as a neo-classical dining room at the Erinvale hotel. Bone Studio brought us in to bring new life to it, and the name earns itself on the walls.
Sculptural murals of indigenous South African flora, modelled by hand and built in layers across the existing surfaces. Fynbos forms against classical proportion, old room and new growth in the same space.

In the double volume dining room, layered pilasters rise the full height of the walls, with capitals and stepped profiles that carry the eye up and hold the room together at its true size.
An office block shares the same bones as this handsome expression of Victorian Regency architecture. The difference is the vision, and the dedication to consider ornamentation.

Cape Town designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden tasked us with manufacturing a number of his signature pieces.

Plaster Art has fabricated work for two Southern Guild artists, in cementitious and concrete media.
Zanele Muholi: Following in the footsteps of many great sculptors through history, it was our turn to render slow, flowing cloth in a hard, unyielding material. Muholi’s monumental sculpture required the simulation of soft fabric in a rigid medium — fold depth, drape direction, the perception of surface tension — all worked by hand to achieve a naturalistic textile quality at sculptural scale. Finished in a consistent matte white, the cementitious robes form the visual counterpoint to the dark bronze face and hands.
Rich Mnisi: The simplicity of the smooth, uniform matte concrete surface belies the complexity of the artistry in the shape. Mnisi’s debut range of outdoor furniture is simple yet complex, flowing yet immovable, cast and finished by Plaster Art SA.
The Grand Hall of this 1905 Edwardian Baroque landmark was in dire straits and required a full restoration.
The scope included repair and reinstatement of detailing throughout. Where original sections were damaged or missing, replacement elements were moulded directly from surviving originals and integrated seamlessly.
All work was executed in accordance with heritage preservation requirements, retaining the building’s original design intent.
Peter Tempelhoff’s latest restaurant and cocktail bar needed a statement piece. Interior design studio MR Design commissioned artist Driaan Klaasen, whose flowing, folding sculptural forms suited the brief exactly.
The bar is built onto a substructure and hand-formed in modified Plaster of Paris that was worked wet, by hand, to Klaasen’s forms. The material takes light beautifully and will develop a bone-like patina as it ages, so the piece keeps changing after it is finished.

The name asked for it, so guests are greeted at the door by a fantastic Mr Fox which was modelled by hand, cast, and finished to stand as the first thing you see and the thing everyone photographs.
